Flipkens, twelfth seed of the qualifiers, beat Ukrainian Katarina Zavatska (WTA 107) in the first heat in three long sets: 5-7, 7-5 and 7-6 (7/2). The match, a war of attrition, lasted no less than 3 hours and 14 minutes. In the second heat, the American Katie Volynets (WTA 350) awaits Flipkens, who beat Monica Puig (WTA 91) from Puerto Rico in 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) and 6-3.
Bonaventure fought past Japanese Nao Hibino (WTA 74) to the second heat. The Liège triumphed in three sets: 6-7 (3/7), 6-3 and 6-3. She finished the job in 2 hours and 2 minutes. Bonaventure has to compete for a place on the main table against home player Catherine Bellis (WTA 249), who passed her compatriot Madison Brengle (WTA 82) in 6-3 and 7-6 (7/4).
Minnen loses first qualifying match
Greet Minnen (WTA 106) lost her first qualifying match for the WTA tournament in Cincinnati (hard / 1.9 million dollars) on Thursday evening. After one hour and 21 minutes of tennis in two sets (7-5 and 6-2), Minnen had to give way to the Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova (WTA 84), the fifteenth seed in the qualifications.
Kuzmova will meet American Ann Li (WTA 133) in the second (and last) qualifying round, who takes part in the qualifications thanks to a wildcard.
The winners of the second round get a place on the main table. There they will find our compatriots Elise Mertens (WTA 22), Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA 58) and Kim Clijsters (no ranking). Clijsters received a wild card for the tournament.
