King still has no beard on commemorative liberation | NOW

King Willem-Alexander still has no beard on a special Fiver (5 euro coin) that is presented because of the 75th anniversary of the liberation. The choice to portray the king without a beard is remarkable; Willem-Alexander has had his much-discussed facial hair since August last year.

“The effigy of the king was made in a period when it was not yet clear whether he would keep the beard, and for example there were no official portraits of him with a beard,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Finance said to NU on Monday. nl know.

The coin for the celebration of 75 years of liberation is just one of the two special commemorative coins that the Royal Dutch Mint presents this year. The second is a so-called Unesco coin that appears in the autumn.

It is not yet clear who will be the designer of this coin.

Ordinary euro coins will not be adjusted for the time being

Also on the ‘normal’ euro coins the old effigy of Willem-Alexander without a beard is still used. The Ministry of Finance cannot say when it is time to consider an alternative to the beardless portrait of Willem-Alexander that Erwin Olaf made in 2013 for the current euro coins.

It does happen, however, that images of Dutch monarchs on coins are adapted. For example, in the past the effigies of Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix were adapted when they visibly grew older. The Ministry of Finance cannot answer the question when Willem-Alexander’s appearance has changed long enough to make such a decision.
