King Charles III’s Cancer Diagnosis: Insight into Therapy Session, Support from Reverend Williams, and Retreat to Sandringham Estate

After their first therapy session and a brief meeting with their son Harry, 39, Charles and Camilla, 76, boarded a helicopter on Tuesday afternoon and flew back to their country estate of Sandringham, 180 kilometers northeast of Buckingham Palace.

When the monarch met Reverend Williams, they shook hands. “It was a handshake between two men who respect each other and are now very close,” the paper described Bild. “He even grabbed the king’s arm during the walk – not everyone can do that. Even this gesture reflects the closeness between him and Karl,” he added.

Queen Camilla, who accompanied her husband in the February cold, said, according to the paper The Telegraph to the supporters who gathered around that Karel is “recovering well and doing what he can”.

They hit the mark

Williams, moved from Gloucester to Sandringham in 2022, where he became a close confidant of the King.

“Trustworthy and empathetic. He celebrates mass every Sunday in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene and is extremely popular and approachable in society,” explained a source from the monarch’s closest circle as to why the reverend won the ruler’s affection.

He is particularly close to the royal family, he also spoke at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. (†96) at Windsor Castle in September 2022. The Queen held him in high esteem and between the lines, as perhaps only she could, put her heart on him to be there for Karl as well.

“Paul Williams was one of the first people Karel told about his illness, even before he spoke to sons Harry and William. Williams is an important advisor to Karel. Conversations with him give him courage,” a palace employee told Bild.

Sandringham is more than a retreat

The king is expected to spend the next few weeks exclusively at Sandringham, from where he will fly to a clinic in the capital for cancer treatment.

Sandringham is close enough to the big city – but far enough away from it at the same time. Karel and Camilla love life in the countryside. Peace and quiet, nature, privacy. Neither of them ever liked the hustle and bustle of the UK metropolis.

Sandringham House, the King’s favorite retreat, is surrounded by three hectares of castle gardens and 243 hectares of parkland, parts of which are open to the public.

Queen Elizabeth II celebrated Christmas with her family in the red brick building completed in 1870. Her father, King George VI (†56), also died here in 1952. And this is where Karl’s father Prince Philip (†99) regularly resorted to, when he had had enough of the royal hustle and bustle.

“Sandringham means much more to the faithful Karl. It is a spiritual place for him. A sheltered place where he can find peace and quiet,” the source confirmed.

How is the monarch feeling right now? “The King is in good spirits and, despite his illness, looks positively to the future. He even joked with the staff several times,” a palace employee told Bild.

In all of this he is now amply assisted by the Reverend Paul Williams, who once studied at Cambridge and St Andrews and has two grown-up daughters. He can be contacted at any time without much effort and lives not far from Sandringham Manor.
