Kiev: deadly attack on Russian officers in eastern Ukraine | Abroad

Army sources in Kiev allege that the chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, is in Ishum. It is not yet clear whether he was also hit. As Commander in Chief, he coordinates the offensive in the Donbas. Moscow has not responded to the report about the attack in Ishum and the possible whereabouts of Gerasimov.

Ishum has a population of 50,000 and is located in eastern Ukraine between Kharkiv and Donetsk.

In western Russia, not far from the border with Ukraine, another military facility has caught fire. The governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkow, announced this via Telegram on Sunday. He did not say what kind of “Defence Department object” was involved or how the fire started. Someone living near the Russian “army facility” was injured.

Recently, there have been regular shelling in this area, according to Moscow from Ukraine. At the beginning of April, an oil storage facility in Belgorod was already bombed. Grenades also flew at targets in Kursk and Bryansk on Saturday. Kiev dismisses the reporting as a Russian provocation to have an excuse to launch missiles at, for example, the Ukrainian capital.

Earlier it became clear that several generals have been killed since the Russian invasion at the end of February. About 20 generals are involved in the fighting in Ukraine, according to US intelligence services. At least six of them were killed. President Zelensky is said to have set up a special team to track down and eliminate the Russian generals and commanders.

Moscow has been insisting for weeks that the “special operation” in Ukraine is going according to plan despite multiple setbacks, including the sinking of the flagship Moskva.

In the Kursk region, a railway bridge partially collapsed. The governor said in a video message on Sunday that it is believed to be sabotage. According to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, an investigation has been launched to trace the perpetrators and bring them to justice. They struck near Sudja, near the Ukrainian border, on the railway to Sosnovi Bor.
