Commissioner resigns following controversy

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today she accepts the resignation of European Commissioner for Trade, Irish Phil Hogan, who was involved in a controversy for violating containment rules for covid-19.

“European Commissioner Phil Hogan has resigned. I respect his decision,” Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement released this evening in Brussels.

“Tonight I presented my resignation as European Commissioner for Trade to the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen,” announced Phil Hogan in a speech published by the community executive.

“It was becoming increasingly clear that the controversy over my recent visit to Ireland was being a distraction from my work as a European commissioner and would affect my role in the important months ahead,” justified the Irish official.

Irish Phil Hogan visited his country between July 31 and August 21 and, on Wednesday of last week, attended a dinner celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Irish Parliament golf club, with 82 guests, including the then Minister of Agriculture Dara Calleary, who resigned from office on Friday.
