KfW improves funding for cooperative housing

With the help of low-interest, long-term loans, the federal government and the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) are promoting both the acquisition of cooperative shares and the establishment of your own housing cooperative. The subsidy is aimed at private individuals who want to use a cooperative apartment themselves. The interest rates on KfW loans, which were previously 1.5 percent below the average market level, will now be raised to two percent below the market rate. In addition, there is a repayment subsidy of 15% of the loan amount. In total, credit subsidies of up to EUR 100,000 and thus savings of up to EUR 35,000 compared to the house bank are possible.

Three million citizens are members of a housing association

On October 4, 2022, the support program for the acquisition of cooperative shares started. It is a credit grant. The interest rate for the loan is reduced from federal funds during the first fixed-interest period. In addition, a not inconsiderable part of the loan debt is waived (15 percent repayment subsidy). A prerequisite for the subsidy is that the cooperative shares acquired are required for the self-use of the cooperative apartment. Natural persons are entitled to apply. In Germany there are around 2,000 housing cooperatives that manage around 2.2 million apartments. Around five million people live in cooperative housing, and around three million citizens are members of a housing cooperative. Source: BMWSB / jb
