KFC Threatened to Be Boycotted for Wasting Food

Jakarta

A consumer rights group in China urges the public to boycott the promotion of fast food restaurants KFC. The promo is considered to make some consumers go crazy buying and wasting food.

KFC last week launched a promo in collaboration with Pop Mart, the Chinese toy maker best known for its mystery boxes. This allows customers to collect a limited edition version of the big-eyed and round-faced Dimoo toy doll when purchasing certain KFC foods.

KFC launched a promotion by partnering with Pop Mart to celebrate the 35th anniversary of opening its first outlet in China. Meanwhile Pop Mart mystery boxes have become a big trend especially among young people.

Many people pay for other people’s food to get toys, or buy outright and throw the food away. One customer is said to be able to spend Rp. 23.35 million to buy 106 foods.

KFC as a food operator using the sales method blind box limited edition to take advantage of consumers’ irrational and excessive purchase of packaged food,” the organization wrote Business Insider, Thursday (13/1/2022).

China has taken legal steps in recent years to suppress food waste from promotion, including a major 2020 campaign to ban influence post binge-eating videos on social media.

In 2021, McDonald’s is including limited edition Pokemon cards at some Happy Meals in the United States (US) and fans are quickly buying up to 50-100 cards at a time to store or resell.

Fan excitement over McDonald’s ‘Rick and Morty’ inspired Szechuan sauce was even more extreme, with some loyal customers willing to buy sauce packets for hundreds of dollars.
