It sounds like an internet joke, but the reality is that 54-year-old Kazuyoshi Miura was hired to make what will be his 37th season as a professional. The veteran Japanese forward will represent the Japanese fourth-tier Suzuka Point Getters.
Believe it’s real. Just a month away from celebrating his 55th birthday (you read that right, 55 years old!), Kazuyoshi Miura, who in 2017 broke the record for the oldest footballer ever in competition, signed for Suzuka Point Getters.
The veteran striker, who appears to have divine protection against the weather, said he was “grateful for the opportunity to play”, promising to “fight to contribute” on the pitch.
The Suzuka club will be the 15th in the player’s career, who was capped 89 times by the Japanese national team, for which he scored 55 goals. Among the various emblems he represented, Santos, from Brazil, Genoa, in Italy, and Dinamo Zagreb, in Croatia, stand out.
