ABC News contacted the creator of these realistic yet false images, a Katy Perry superfan from Brazil who goes by the name Sali. Sali mentioned that while AI played a role in the editing process, the technology is not yet as advanced as commonly believed. He explained that realistic outcome is achieved through a combination of AI, Photoshop, and real images of people. By replacing their facial features with those of Katy Perry, he is able to seamlessly integrate her face into the images.

Sali further elaborated that working with AI involves, for the most part, touching up certain features and aspects to enhance realistic qualities. The process is not fully automated, requiring manual adjustments to ensure the body and face proportions of Katy Perry match those in the images. Despite the existence of AI image-generators, the editing process involves painstaking effort to produce convincing and authentic visuals. Sali’s dedicated Instagram page showcases numerous exceptional creations featuring Katy Perry, as well as other AI-generated photos of celebrities who did not actually attend the Met Gala, such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga.
