July 28, 2020

The information was prepared by Māra Zepa, Kaspersky’s public relations consultant in Latvia.

Many countries are slowly easing the containment measures introduced by the coronavirus pandemic, leading to growing interest in domestic and international tourism. Kaspersky pays attention to some travel habits of parents and children during the trip.

The survey “Responsible digital upbringing of children” shows that 68% of parents in Latvia use devices to entertain children while away. In addition, 17% of respondents try to reassure children with the help of devices, while 16% try to free up time for their own needs. Thus, there is a possibility that children are often left alone with the devices. In addition, the survey shows that 80% of children in Latvia have their own smartphone or tablet computer. Of this large number, 37% of children were seven years old when they received their first personal device. However, 31% of parents in Latvia have not discussed child safety rules on the Internet. This means that children do not always know how to act safely online.

“Most parents give children devices to entertain, free up time for their own needs or to reassure children. However, children should not use digital devices in an uncontrolled way. Kaspersky has found that 32% of parents in Latvia would like to better monitor their child’s digital life. “The time spent at the screen and during negotiations, but also a security solution is needed,” says Andis Steinmanis, Kaspersky ‘s head of the Baltic States.

Follow these tips to teach your children how to use their devices properly and to protect them from inappropriate content.

1. Explain to the child the ethics of the Internet (not to write anything offensive or offensive, not to publish shameful, indecent photos, etc.) and safety rules on the Internet (not to reply to strangers, not to publish too much personal information, etc.).

2. Talk to the child. Get to know his interests and suggest suitable materials and video bloggers. Reassure your child that you are a modern parent who understands him or her and can always turn to him or her for advice.

3. Install a strong security solution, such as Kaspersky Safe Kids, to successfully monitor your child’s activities.
