Oleg Karavaev defended the goal of the Latvian national team in its first official game after regaining independence. Between 1992 and 1999, he ran 38 times as a member of the national team, taking part in historical matches such as 0: 0 against Denmark (1992), 0: 0 against Spain (1992), 3: 1 against Norway (1998). 0-0 against Greece (1999).

During his career as a club, Oleg Karavaev defended the goals of various teams in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Serbia, Cyprus and Germany, but in Latvia he represented the colors of Riga “Daugava”, “Olympia”, “Skonto” FC and FC “Riga”. From time to time he became the Latvian champion and the winner of the Latvian Cup, but in 1998 he was named the best goalkeeper of the Super League championship season.
