Kamil Jablonski finishes in a new best time at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii

Kailua-Kona – Kamil Jablonski did it. As the first member of a Werner sports club, he took part in the Ironman World Championship on Saturday in Hawaii and finished the competition in 9: 36.03 hours. With this, the member of TV Werne Wasserfreunde once again undercut its record from the qualification in Frankfurt / Main on June 30 (9: 37.06).

“I am super satisfied. I couldn’t have imagined it any better. It is unique, ”says the policeman. The 33-year-old took 1: 05.46 hours for the 3.86 kilometers in the Pacific Ocean, 4: 48.55 hours for the 180.2 kilometers on the bike and 3: 29.50 hours for the final marathon. He ended up in 278th place out of 2,272 finishers.

“I am also a daylight finisher, which is amazing,” says Jablonski, also of the fact that he finished the competition in the light – in Hawaii the sunset sets in very early.

A look at the overall rating shows how strong his performance can be assessed. 39th place in the overall classification goes to German Stefan Schumacher, who takes 9: 08.54 seconds and is only half an hour faster than Jablonski.

“Competition with ups and downs”

It was a competition with ups and downs. “If you think that you’re totally in at kilometer 25 on the running route, you somehow get out of there,” says Jablonski and also reports tingling fingers and a “sag”. For example, he had placed a “special needs” bag at a catering station. It contained macadamia nuts and a drink – that gave him the kick for the last section on the running track.

“Overall, we were well looked after,” Jablonski also praises the numerous helpful volunteers. “I was even able to enjoy the last few kilometers, even if my legs hurt,” the endurance athlete described in a phone call in the evening after the competition. “I am lying on the bed and resting, but I still cannot sleep,” says Jablonski at 10:00 p.m. local time, which is about five hours after the arrival. At 6.55 a.m. Jablonski started his weakest discipline with the field of amateurs half an hour after the pros.

But despite the high waves and the unpleasant salt water, the Lüner landed at the end of the turning point after 1: 05.46 hours at the Kailua pier. He was exactly one minute faster than in qualifying in Frankfurt. “I took my time in the transition area because the race was not under pressure,” continues the “Eisenmann”. He had made it in advance with the qualification, Hawaii was the icing on the cake. “I took a conservative approach on the bike route,” said Jablonski. In the first two hours he had a lower wattage (224 in the first and 227 watts in the second).

“I could still gain” – and so Jablonski achieved 240 watts on average in the third hour on the bike. It was extremely windy on the Queen K Highway. “I had a real shoulder pain, I was lying so heavily on the trailer,” he says of his strongest individual discipline. He gradually overtook numerous competitors on the route through the lava desert and drove his race largely alone: “In the last 45 minutes, a group of cyclists of roughly equal strength emerged, who then overtook each other. I took it easy with a view of the marathon. ”

The climbs on the already wavy route were not so extreme. But the external conditions. “It was 32, 33 degrees, plus this humidity. It’s bad, ”says Jablonski, describing the other framework. On the eve of the competition, it rained on Big Island for four hours.

Jablonski enjoyed the support of the fans when he returned to the transition zone by bike and ran through the crowds of spectators for the first ten kilometers. He also kept in touch with his parents Stefan and Noti and his brother Rafael. After Jablonski ran back towards the finish on Ali’i Drive and had overcome his low, he could really enjoy the competition. And then he looked into the proud faces of his parents and brother.
