A jury trial will examine a criminal case for cocaine shipments from Argentina to Russia. The Solntsevsky court of Moscow appointed the jury for February 14th.
“The court held preliminary hearings on Monday and granted our request for a trial by jury, appointing them for selection on February 14 at 12:00 Moscow time,” said Tost lawyer Alexander Kostanyants, one of the defendants in the case.
He added that the defense is preparing appeals, since it considers that the case should be examined by the Dorogomilovsky and not Solntsevsky court of Moscow. “And the second point, the court during the preliminary hearings refused the defense to satisfy all requests to exclude evidence as obtained illegally. We intend to appeal these decisions, ”added Mr. Kostanyants.
Recall that the scandal with the transport of drugs broke out in February 2017, when it became known about the discovery of 362 kg of cocaine in the Russian embassy in Buenos Aires. Drugs planned to be transported by diplomatic mail to Russia.
The transportation of cargo (by that time the security forces had replaced the drug with ordinary flour), which was under operational control, ended with the detention in Moscow of the former delivery manager of the Russian Embassy in Argentina, Ali Abyanov, as well as businessmen Vladimir Kalmykov and Ishtimir Khudzhamov. Soon, Andrei Kovalchuk, who was accused of organizing cocaine smuggling, was detained in Germany. According to media reports, in the beginning of September in the cocaine case two new defendants appeared, they were accused of international wanted. In early November, Kommersant learned that the “cocaine case” was transferred to court. The Solntsevsky court later extended the four accused in the case to an arrest until May 12, 2020.
