Jurgen Klinsmann admits he and his compatriots are struggling to understand Gareth Southgate’s refusal to pick Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

The 21-year-old has built a reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in European football since joining Bundesliga club Manchester City as a teenager.

Sancho now looks set to finally complete a £ 77million move to Manchester United, coveted by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for almost two years.

Despite his abundant talent and previous form for England – he was one of the Three Lions’ most effective strikers during the qualifying campaign – Sancho has been limited to a brief substitution against the Czech Republic so far, and was again left on the bench for the last time. 16 draw against Germany.

Reacting to Sancho’s latest snub, Klinsmann told the BBC: “This is a topic that we Germans discuss from top to bottom.

“We can’t understand that Jadon Sancho doesn’t play for England, or that he doesn’t have more minutes because we think he’s a very special player who has different equipment.

“He’s unpredictable, so we’re surprised he doesn’t have more minutes.”

Sancho’s hopes of making his way into the starting XI were hampered by Bukayo Saka’s rise to stardom, while Southgate’s move to a 3-4-3 formation dealt a further blow to his hopes to have an impact.

Asked about Southgate’s decision to switch to a more defensive line-up, Alan Shearer told the BBC ahead of the game: “I thought he could have done something similar with four at the back because we looked very solid and did not concede.

“I think it’s imperative that Phillips has a little more freedom to go forward and help these three forwards. With the pace and ability of the wingers, it will be a huge competition and they have to try to dominate and push them back.
