Jumbo wants to double in Flanders and starts cooperation with flash courier Gorillas

The Dutch supermarket group Jumbo and flash delivery company Gorillas are going to work together in the Netherlands and Flanders. In Flanders, Jumbo wants to almost double its retail park this year by opening 15 supermarkets.

The partnership between Jumbo and Gorillas focuses on the fast delivery of food products in major cities. The collaboration is especially important for the Dutch market, where Jumbo can make a bigger fist against Albert Heijn’s home deliveries via Gorillas.

In Belgium Gorillas is only active in Antwerp and Brussels. Until now, Gorillas bought its products for Belgium from Colruyt. Jumbo will now be Gorillas’ preferred supplier. Conversely, Jumbo customers will now also be able to choose to have their shopping cart delivered by Gorillas.

Both companies have agreed to work together for ‘several years’. Gorillas previously concluded such a strategic partnership with the British Tesco and the French Casino Group.

This is how Jumbo is conquering a place in the Belgian supermarket landscape

Jumbo also announced annual figures yesterday. Last year, the turnover of the retailer from Veghel in North Brabant rose by two percent to 9.9 billion. Jumbo opened 18 stores last year, half of which are in Flanders, where it now has 17 stores. Two of these are run by self-employed persons. Jumbo wants to open 15 supermarkets in Belgium this year, which would almost double the retail park here. Part of the growth will come from independent retailers.

Jumbo group figures show that online turnover grew the most. It went up 30 percent to 650 million. Jumbo now has 16 regional online delivery hubs after adding 10 last year.

Jumbo is a non-listed supermarket group owned by the Dutch Van Eerd family. That family has also acquired a 50 percent interest in Hema. The Jumbo stores now have a separate shelf with Hema products. Conversely, Jumbo will start selling food products through Hema this year. It is still a test.

Jumbo is therefore committed to growth on various fronts. The Van Eerd family is very entrepreneurial and switches quickly. Where necessary, it opts for cooperation, as the agreement with Gorillas shows.

In the Netherlands, Jumbo Albert Heijn is increasingly on its heels. In the wake of Albert Heijn, Jumbo has now also set its sights on Flanders. This means that the largest Belgian retailer, Colruyt, is coming under explicit fire from two quarters. Colruyt, which wants to continue to offer the lowest prices, is able to hold its own in terms of turnover, but its profitability is coming under increasing pressure.
