Julian Nagelsmann, infected with coronavirus, leads Bayern Munich to victory from hotel room Football

sport">Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann has tested positive for the coronavirus. The German was therefore missing on the bench on Wednesday evening in Lisbon during his team’s won away match in the Champions League against Benfica (0-4). Bayern had initially reported that Nagelsmann was absent due to the flu.

sport">A day after the game, the ‘Rekordmeister’ announced that the 34-year-old trainer has tested positive. According to Bayern, Nagelsmann has been fully vaccinated against the corona virus. Separated from his squad and staff, he flies back to Munich in a medical plane. Nagelsmann goes into isolation again at home.

sport">Still, the coach played a big part in the victory. From the hotel, Nagelsmann kept in touch with his assistants. “We had prepared the match together, but he did pass me the substitutions,” said Dino Toppmöller, who was ordered to take Benjamin Pavard off the field for Serge Gnabry. It turned out to be a golden move. “Julian feels very ill, but there is nothing wrong with his head. With Gnabry, we were much more dangerous. The first goal after the break worked like a bottle opener.”

sport">Toppmöller and Xaver Zembrod are in charge of the main force of Bayern for the time being. The Bundesliga leader will play at home against Hoffenheim on Saturday.
