The Investigating Judge of San Francisco Gotera, in the department of Morazán, Mirtala Portillo, issued a new arrest warrant against the political leader Rubén Zamora, nullifying her previous ruling, which revoked the first arrest warrant. This was announced by the director of the Americas Division of Human Rights Watch, Juanita Goebertus.

«The judge had ordered his release but 3 days later she revoked the ruling without informing Zamora. The criminal process against Zamora is abusive and a mockery of the victims of El Mozote,” wrote the Human Rights defender.

Goebertus disclosed a document on his X account, where it reads that the judge has once again issued “new arrest warrants” against the former diplomat. According to the first ruling, Zamora and 9 other former deputies helped the High Command of the Armed Forces to avoid responsibilities through the approval of the 1993 Amnesty Law.

The report adds that the conditions that founded the benefit of release have changed due to new contributions from the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic.

“Release the acts of communication through the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic so that, by virtue of the Functional Directorate that it currently has, with the National Civil Police, they make the aforementioned arrest warrant effective,” the resolution quotes.

In December 2023, at the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, those prosecuted for the crime of personal concealment were granted release from prison Luis Roberto Angulo, Raúl Manuel Somoza, Raúl Antonio Peña and Rubén Ignacio Zamora.
