Jonglei Governor issues a decree after expelling a group of businesswomen

On Monday, the governor of Jonglei State, Dinai Jok Shakur, issued an order rescinding the decision of former Bor Municipality Mayor Samuel Atting to evict a group of businesswomen from the main market in Bor town.
The governor’s decision comes after days of tension due to a dispute over land ownership between Bor municipality and the women’s group, prompting Deputy Governor Jacob Akieg Dengdit to suspend the state land minister for issuing an order to award the disputed land to foreign traders.
Tensions between Bor municipality and the greengrocers began a month ago after the former mayor moved the women to a new location, a decision the greengrocers vehemently rejected.
Mahmoud Chol, Director General of the Ministry of Information, told Radio Tamazuj: “On Monday, the governor issued several decisions, including the dismissal of the mayor of Bor and the reinstatement of the Minister of Lands. He also issued an order banning the sale of lands within the city of Bor.”
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Abu Garang Ating, representative of the affected women, said they are happy that justice has been served after months of ongoing battles with the municipality.
And she continued, “As women, we are happy. The ruler returned the land to us, and said that he needed four days to remove the materials brought by the investors who expropriated our land, as well as to fill the gaps that were excavated during the construction work.
The women’s representative called on the government and relief agencies to provide support so that she can work effectively.
