Jonathan Bour: Triumphing Over Adversity as an Amputee Motorcycle Racing Champion

Amputated left arm following a terrible road accident in 2021, Jonathan Bour does not feel sorry for himself. Endowed with unfailing mental strength, the Thionvillois competes in motorcycle racing and has even returned to his profession as a… machine driver.

Jean-Michel Cavalli – Today at 08:00

Already mentioned in our columns, the destiny of Jonathan Bour took a tragic turn on a Luxembourg highway in June 2021. This motorcycle accident cost him an arm. As soon as he left the hospital and returned to his home in Garche, the Thionvillois did everything possible to tame his handicap: “When I think back to those doctors who told me “You are going to have to accept the loss of your arm”, I still smile. Of course I accept it. In any case, I don’t have much choice, he quips. I can do everything and even better than before. »

Racing Pilote

Equipped with a latest generation bionic arm, Jonathan was quick to get back in the saddle. On a daily basis, his means of transportation remains the motorcycle. And for several months, he has even been riding it on circuits as part of the French PMR Cup Moto championship. Important clarification: the 28-year-old young man pilots with one arm, without his carbon prosthesis: “I am the only competitor in this situation. Obviously, this surprises during the race. »

Determined to push all his limits, Jonathan entered the French PMR motorcycle championship.

A lover of original piloting, he has not sacrificed to the current trend. His bike, an antique GSX-R1000 Suzuki, is devoid of technological assistance. This rudimentary dimension does not prevent it from take curves at more than 200 km/h and approach 300 km/h in a straight line. The faithful of the Chambley circuit, which regularly opens its doors to it and is one of its main sponsors, can attest to this.

The Chambley circuit is among its main sponsors, like TP55, Seven and Insta360.

In no way satisfied by this experience, the pilot wishes to compete with able-bodied riders in the future: “I am going to present my request to the French Motorcycle Federation. I won’t back down. » His knowledge of piloting, combined with his reputation on social networks – the person concerned is followed by 100,000 people on TikTok and some of his videos have 5 million views – resonate as major assets to convince decision-makers.

“When you are at home, alone, you fall into the void”

Competitor and hard worker. During our last interview, Jonathan proclaimed his desire to return to his professional career. While many others in his place would have been content to receive a comfortable disability allowance, he chose to return to his job as a machine driver in Luxembourg.

Jonathan returned to his position within the Luxembourg construction company Félix Giorgetti.

Supported by his employer, he recently returned to the workforce of the Félix Giorgetti company: “Luckily, with the exception of the indicator, all the controls are on the right. When I returned to work, some colleagues were surprised to see me return to my position. For me it was very important. » An almost vital importance, “because when you are at home, alone, you fall into emptiness. This is not my vision of life. »

As if in a twist of fate, his first project took him near Luxembourg airport, not far from his accident: “I passed the same place on a motorbike. If we are afraid, we sink,” he proclaims. Jonathan wants to let this painful memory fade into the rearview mirror of his existence. Better yet, he seems to have made it a strength, as evidenced by his race number, 17: “I had my accident on June 17, 2021, hence this choice…”
