Pandemic aid to employment, almost 2.5 billion subsidies from the ministry – GOOD MORNING SLOVAKIA

Now two and a half years ago, on March 31, 2020, the Slovak government approved an aid scheme prepared by the Ministry of Labor (known under the name of “Prvá pomoc”) to maintain corporate jobs in Slovakia. A measure made necessary due to the first lockdowns due to the new coronavirus pandemic, when companies in a short time found themselves in often unsustainable situations, with machinery stopped, workers forced to stay at home and productions that no longer had outlet markets. Even the main customers of Slovakian industry, Germany in the lead, were in fact in the same conditions.

On 6 April 2020, the employment offices began to accept the first applications for economic contributions from employers. At the time, no one anticipated that such a massive financial aid would be involved: in this period it supported 176,000 business entities to the tune of almost 2.5 billion euros.

Subsidies from the Prvá pomoc program supported businesses and self-employed workers by providing a share of 5.7 million monthly wages for more than 770,000 employees. A measure that has affected one in three citizens of Slovakia.
