Jon Lester leaves preseason with Nationals due to surgery

Left-handed pitcher Jon Lester left Washington Nationals preseason camp to undergo surgery to remove his thyroid.

Lester, 37, took the trip from West Palm Beach, Florida, to New York. The Nationals reported that surgery is scheduled for Friday.

“We hope he can pitch in about a week,” said Puerto Rican manager Dave Martinez. “We want him to get care now, so this is not a problem.”

In 2006, Lester’s rookie season with the Boston Red Sox ended early after he was diagnosed with a type of lymphoma. He underwent chemotherapy and returned to the club the following preseason.

Lester is about to start his 16th major league season and his first with Washington. He came as a free agent on a one-year, $ 5 million deal after serving the previous six seasons with the Chicago Cubs.

On Wednesday’s game, the Nationals fell 8-5 to the Miami Marlins.
