Jokowi Meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas: Indonesia’s Support for Palestine

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) held a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. During the meeting, Jokowi emphasized Indonesia’s stance in supporting Palestinian independence.

The second meeting took place on the sidelines of the Extraordinary High Level Conference (Summit) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which was held at the King Abdulaziz International Convention Center (KAICC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday (11/11). Jokowi stated that violence against people in Palestine must stop.

Indonesia is committed to supporting Palestine optimally and concretely. Violence must be stopped immediately. Forced displacement of civilians must end. Humanitarian aid must be provided immediately,” said Jokowi in a statement distributed by the Press, Media and Information Bureau of the Presidential Secretariat, Sunday (12/11 /2023).

Jokowi also expressed his concern for Mahmoud Abbas regarding the conditions that occurred Gaza At the moment. Jokowi said Israel’s violent actions in Gaza had violated humanitarian values.

“This heinous act is a serious violation of international law and humanitarian values,” he said.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi was also present at the meeting between the two leaders. Jokowi told Mahmoud Abbas not to hesitate to convey the need for assistance to the Indonesian government.

Mahmoud Abbas expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s commitment to supporting Palestinian independence. He also expressed his gratitude for the humanitarian assistance from Indonesia for Palestinians in Gaza.

Jokowi also shared the moment of his warm meeting with Mahmoud Abbas on his personal Instagram account. In his upload, Jokowi included photos of him shaking hands and embracing Abbas. Jokowi called the moment an embrace of friendship.

“A friendly embrace for His Excellency Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas whom I met on the sidelines of the Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation at the King Abdulaziz International Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia today,” Jokowi wrote on Instagram.
