Jokowi Bans Bauxite Exports in 2022, Here’s Antam’s Response

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has ordered that bauxite exports be stopped starting in 2022. This needs to be done so that Indonesia no longer sells raw raw materials, but must add value first after going through the domestic processing and refining process.

Regarding this issue, PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTM) as a producer and exporter of bauxite finally opened its voice.

Antam’s Corporate Secretary Yulan Kustiyan said Antam would, in principle, comply with the regulatory plan set by the government. Thus, all strategies when bauxite exports began to be banned have also been prepared.

“In principle, Antam must comply with regulations, we will definitely follow all applicable regulations,” he said at a press conference, quoted Friday (12/24/2021).

“Antam will certainly strengthen the company’s business portfolio with the potential and resources it has, and currently Antam is exploring several potential business opportunities from upstream to downstream for nickel commodities, especially gold and bauxite,” Yulan continued.

In its current upstream business, said Yulan, Antam is actively conducting exploration activities in the company’s areas, and is also conducting preliminary studies in several areas that will serve as future prospects.

“This also opens an opportunity for Antam to be able to synergize in managing national mining assets to support downstream development,” he explained.

Previously, Director of Operations and Business Transformation of PT Aneka Tambang Tbk Risono said that until September 2021 the company’s bauxite sales reached 910 thousand tons. Bauxite sales during the nine months of 2021 fell 4.3% compared to the same period last year of 951 thousand tons.

Meanwhile, bauxite ore production during the nine months of 2021 was recorded at 1.37 million wet metric tons (wmt), up 5% compared to the same period in 2020 of 1.30 million wmt.

Over the past three years, Antam’s bauxite ore sales have soared in 2019, reaching 1.66 million tons.

The following is Antam’s bauxite sales over the past few years:

2018: 920 thousand tons.
2019: 1.66 million tons.
2020: 1.23 million tonnes.
2021 (to September 2021): 910 thousand tons.

Meanwhile, from the production side, the highest bauxite ore production in 2019 reached 1.73 million tons.

The following is Antam’s bauxite ore production since 2018:

2018: 1.10 million tons.
2019: 1.73 million tons.
2020: 1.55 million tonnes.
2021 (to September 2021): 1.37 million tons.

To note, the government continues to encourage the downstream mining sector, especially minerals. In order to increase the added value in the country, the export ban on raw mining commodities was carried out.

After previously succeeding in banning nickel ore exports since January 1, 2020, President Joko Widodo ordered that bauxite exports should also be banned from 2022. This means that it will be faster than the regulations in Law No. 3 of 2020 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining (UU Law No. 3 of 2020). mineral and coal).

The Minerba Law itself stipulates that the export of unrefined minerals such as concentrates is limited to only three years since this Law takes effect on June 10, 2020. Three years after its promulgation means that the ban on exports of raw materials and mineral concentrates will take effect from June 10, 2023.

Not only bauxite, the President also asked Indonesia to stop exporting copper concentrate, to tin, after Indonesia had previously successfully stopped exports of nickel ore as of January 1, 2020.

According to him, this needs to be done so that Indonesia no longer sells raw materials, but must first add value after going through the domestic processing and refining process. Thus, the state and the people will benefit more than just selling raw materials.
