He’s the favorite. The film Joker of Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, leads the race for the 92e edition of the Oscars with eleven nominations in total, announced Monday the Academy of arts and sciences of the American cinema, which gives the prestigious prizes.

Joker is in the running for the categories of best film, best actor, best director, best screenplay, as well as many technical categories. He’s neck and neck with three other favorites, The Irishman by Martin Scorsese, Once Upon a Timein Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino and 1917 by Sam Mendes, with ten nominations each. French side, Ladj Ly’s film, Wretched, is nominated in the category of best foreign film. The Oscars will be awarded in Hollywood on February 9.

The Academy criticized for its lack of diversity

Palme d’or at the last Cannes Festival, the South Korean film Parasite by Bong Joon-ho also stood out with six nominations, notably in the flagship category for best film, that of best foreign film and that of best director.

Other outsiders include Marriage Story (six nominations), with prominent actor duo Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, both selected, Jojo rabbit (six nominations) and Daughters of Doctor March by Greta Gerwig. The latter was however not retained in the category of directors, where no woman is selected this year, which will undoubtedly cause controversy in Hollywood.

Often criticized for its lack of diversity, the Academy of Oscars will again face criticism for this 92e selection: black American actress Cynthia Erivo is the only non-white artist to have made her way in the nominations, in the best actress category for Harriet.

Commentators were already pointing their finger at the absence of Eddie Murphy, who made his return to the cinema in Dolemite Is My Name, and Jennifer Lopez, who could claim a nomination for Queens.
