Johnny Depp has surrendered his role as dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. The third film from the Fantastic Beastsseries by Harry Potter author JK Rowling, the American will no longer participate.
The reason is the libel case that Depp lost this week. The actor had The Sun charged because that tabloid had called him a woman abuser in an article about the divorce from his wife Amber Heard. She accuses him of assault.
The British judge on Monday ruled that Depp’s violence against Heard was largely proven and said she feared for her life at various times. The actor is appealing the decision.
Depp writes on Instagram that he is stepping down at the request of film studio Warner Bros .:
