JLSS Figure Skater Takes 3rd Place in Budapest Trophy 2023 Competition

The figure skater took 3rd place in the competition in Budapest

Four figure skaters from the Jelgava Ice Sports School (JLSS) took part in the “Budapest trophy 2023” competition of the ISU challenger series of the international skating association. Kirill Korkačs had the best start, with 3rd place in juniors.

Four JLSS athletes competed in this competition – Kirill Korkačs, Anton Trofimov and Emilija Ozola in the junior age group and Anastasia Konga in the adult group.

Kirill Korkačs won the 3rd place in the competition of 12 athletes with a total of 144.53 points. “After the short program, Kirill was third. He was second in the optional program and also achieved a new personal record, but overall he took 3rd place,” JLSS figure skating coach Anna Belēviča tells the Jelgava municipality institution “Sporta servis centrs”. He lost only 3.06 points to the second-placed French athlete. Crucially, Kirill gained world ranking points, which can help him in other competitions, for example, influence the group in which to compete, as usual athletes are divided according to the balance of strength depending on the ranking.

Anastasija Konga also had a good start – she took 9th place in the women’s group in the competition of 27 athletes with a total of 148.19 points. “Even with one gross mistake in the short program, Anastasia achieved her personal record, the good performance in the selection program allowed her to rank 7th, however, in the overall ranking, our figure skater remained in 9th place,” says A. Beleviča. Unfortunately, Anastasija did not get world ranking points – to get ranking points, she had to rank in the top eight. “Unfortunately, it plays a significant role in the fight for a place in the Latvian national team. The athlete from Latvia who will have the highest number of rating points in the overall ranking of two will participate in the European and World Championships challenger or big prize in competitions,” explains the JLSS coach.

Antons Trofimovs ranked 9th among 12 boys, while Emilija ozola ranked 16th among 30 girls. “We can congratulate Emily for the first triple luka performed in the competition – the most difficult of the triple jumps,” says the coach.
