Jewish Extremist Students from Chabad-Lubavitch Sect Behind Secret Tunnel in Brooklyn

A group of Jewish extremist students from the Chabad-Lubavitch sect was in charge of digging the controversial tunnel that was discovered this week in Brooklynand that it was built without the consent of its religious leaders or the permission of the New York authorities.

According to a report revealed by New York Postthe construction of the tunnel was carried out to expand the place where Menachem Mendel Schneerson, founder of the movement to which the teenagers belong, is believed to be buried.

The clandestine tunnel, which measured 3 feet high, 20 feet wide and 50 feet long, was initially built by six dissident members of the Hasidic movement., who are dedicated to the study of Kabbalah, the mystical tradition of Judaism. The young people were between 19 and 21 years old, and they began to dig the tunnel themselves, using rudimentary tools.

To avoid being discovered, they filled their pockets with dirt and spread it throughout the neighborhood. “Have you seen the movie ‘The Shawshank Redemption’? That’s what these young people did at the beginning: they dug and put the dirt in their pockets,” Lubabitcher community member in Crown Heights, Eitan Kalmowitz, described to the New York Post.

During the excavation process, the youth raised money and hired a group of migrant workers, whom they described as “Mexicans,” to help them finish the tunnel. The workers were housed in an abandoned building that contained a ritual bath for men, near the Chabad headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway.

“The Mexicans lived in the building for three weeks during the construction,” Kalmowitz said, adding that the immigrants did the work “correctly” and installed support beams. “They slept and ate there because it was a secret operation.”

A Chabad member, who preferred to remain anonymous, He stated that he was amazed at the way they managed to keep it a secret.

“I was surprised by the secrecy and secrecy of all this,” he declared. “It’s incredible to me that they kept it a secret. The yeshiva boys are very idealistic, extreme.”

Controversy over the tunnel erupted earlier this week, when some community members discovered it and called in cement workers to fill it in.

Violent scenes broke out on Monday when the New York police intervened after some of the students tried to prevent access to the tunnel. Nine of those involved were arrested for criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.
