Jeonju Wansan Police Station Issued Incorrect Traffic Violation Notice, Almost Resulting in Wrongful Fines: A Public Interest Report Gone Wrong

The Jeonju Wansan Police Station issued a fine notice for a traffic signal violation reported as a public interest report without properly checking the license plate number, which almost resulted in the wrong number of victims, drawing attention.

According to a Yonhap News report on the 3rd, Mr. Kim, who lives in Jangsu, Jeollabuk-do, received a fine notice from Jeonju Wansan Police Station on the 18th of last month.

This notice, issued under the name of ‘Notice of Violation and Advance Notice of Imposition of Fines’, states that Mr. Kim’s vehicle made an illegal left turn somewhere in Seosin-dong, Wansan-gu, Jeonju on September 21st, and that a fine of 70,000 won will be imposed.

However, Mr. Kim was working in Jangsu that day and did not go to Jeonju. Mr. Kim confirmed through the photo attached to the fine notice that the notice had been issued incorrectly. The license plate number of Kim’s vehicle was ‘X95X’, but the license plate number in the photo was ‘X59X’. A fine was imposed on the wrong vehicle with a similar license plate number.

Mr. Kim went to the police station in person to ask questions.

The police officer who said, “You made an illegal left turn,” checked the license plate number and said, “I’m sorry. “I will destroy the notice,” he said.

Mr. Kim’s children expressed their indignation, saying, “How could they send a notice of a fine of 70,000 won without properly checking the license plate number?” and “Why would my elderly mother have gone all the way from Jangsu to Jeonju with the notice?”

He then raised his voice, saying, “If you don’t look at it properly and just pay the fine, wouldn’t you be incurring a loss without knowing?”

An official at the Wansan Police Station said, “It was a public interest report made by another citizen at the time, but it appears that the vehicle number was entered incorrectly.” He added, “There are limitations in comparing each part (such as checking the vehicle license plate number) due to manpower issues. “I know that cases like this occur frequently across the country,” he said.
