Jazz Trotter : Ryan Keberle – Corner Dreams

The history of Collectiv do Brasil and “Sonhos da Esquina”

Of all the brass instruments in a modern ensemble, the trombone could easily replace the singer. This is probably due to the tone, color, range and pitch of this unique instrument, which allows the trombonist to evoke the human voice, moan and cry like the best blues singers. In Brazilian music, the trombone is able to do something quite different. It evokes that fleeting Brazilian emotion called “miss you“. When Ryan Keberle plays the trombone with his Brazilian colleagues from Collectiv do Brasilit gives wings to this emotion.

This is how I fell in love with Brazilian music… when I first heard the music of Elis Regina decades ago– Ryan Keberle.

In 2017, Ryan Keberle took time off from directing Hunter College’s jazz program to travel to Brazil. While in São Paulo, he met three prominent – and rather busy – musicians: the pianist Felipe Silveirathe bass-player Tiago Alves and the drummer and percussion colorist Paulinho Vicente. The trio and Ryan Keberle instantly become kindred spirits, sharing a deep love for Brazil’s sophisticated musical tradition, represented by Ivan Lins, Edu Lobo, Toninho Horta and Milton Nascimento, as well as a love for American jazz. It didn’t take long for Ryan Keberle and the Brazilian trio to become the quartet that would become Collectiv do Brasil.

Soon, new music by Ryan Keberle appeared and was added to the repertoire that the quartet began to refine and perfect during regular concerts in São Paulo and the surrounding area. The extraordinary chemistry between the musicians was electrifying, transcending cultural baggage, immersed in the universal beauty of the Afro-centric roots of jazz and Brazilian music. So it’s no surprise that plans were made for Ryan Keberle to return to Brazil, which he did a year later, to pay homage to the music they loved, especially some of its creators. legendary, Toninho Horta and Milton Nascimento. This is how the album was born “Corner Dreams”.

Paying homage to Milton Nascimento and the music he created during his legendary years at Clube da Esquina, this project exudes an almost spiritual quality, much like the music of Milton Nascimento himself. But this quartet was also determined to honor another legendary author, Toninho Horta, with three compositions by Ryan Keberle as well. This repertoire features Ryan Keberle’s arrangements, seductive variety and sensuality in each lovingly crafted phrase of “Sonhos da Esquina”.
