Every second Bulgarian still likes Russia

Bulgaria is the only EU member state to see a decline in the percentage of people who think the European Union is a good thing. This is shown by the results of a Eurobarometer survey for the spring of 2022.

Nearly half of Bulgarians evaluate China and Russia positively, while over 50% have a negative attitude towards the United States.

The survey shows that almost two-thirds of Europeans consider EU membership a good thing. This is also the highest result since 2007. The only exceptions are Greece and Slovakia, where more respondents consider it “neither good nor bad”.

Compared to the latest EP survey from the end of 2021, the results on this indicator have increased significantly in most Member States. In Bulgaria, however, there is a slight decline of 2 percentage points – to 47%.

Nearly half of our compatriots – 49%, have a positive view of the EU, which is a decrease of 2% compared to the end of 2021.

Russia is rated positively by only 10% of Europeans surveyed. China has the second lowest score of 22%. Europeans have a more positive attitude towards Britain – 65%, followed by the United States with 58%.

Bulgarians also have a high positive attitude towards Britain – 62%.

At the same time, at the moment almost every second Bulgarian evaluates Russia and China positively, while the predominant evaluation for the USA is negative – 53% against 40% positive.

Most citizens perceive the war in Ukraine as a fundamental change – 61% of Europeans are not sure that their lives will remain unchanged, while only about 1/3 do not expect changes in their lifestyle (37%).

In Bulgaria, more than 2/3 of the respondents are unsure that their lives will remain unchanged (71%), and only 25% do not expect changes.

Due to rising inflation and the cost of living even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which further intensified the trend, four out of ten Europeans say they already feel a negative impact on their standard of living (40%).

We almost two out of three respondents say they already have a negative effect on their lifestyle (62%)which is the highest share of all Member States.

Despite the negatives, 59% of Europeans consider the protection of common European values ​​such as freedom and democracy to be a priority, even if it affects the cost and cost of living, which is seen as a clear sign of European sustainability and unity. In Bulgaria, however, only 28% of respondents are of the same opinion, giving priority to maintaining prices and living costs (70%).

Growing concerns about the economic situation are also reflected in setting the political priorities on which European citizens want the EP to focus: the fight against poverty and social exclusion is mentioned first (38%), followed by public health (35%), where there has been a significant decline of 7% over the last six months, and democracy and the rule of law (32%), an increase of 7%.

The attitudes of the Bulgarians are close to the Central European ones, assessing as ntop priorities for combating poverty and social exclusion and supporting the economy and job creation (both by 46%), with public health (39%) and democracy and the rule of law and the future of Europe in second and third place (both 28%).

Perceptions of the war and its significance for the European Union are also reflected in the definition of the core values ​​that citizens want the European Parliament to defend as a priority: democracy is once again at the forefront and increases by 6 percentage points compared to autumn 2021 (38%). ). This is followed by the protection of human rights in the EU and around the world, as well as freedom of speech and thought, each indicator by 27%.

For our compatriots The leading values ​​that the European Parliament must defend are freedom of movement in the European Union (33%), followed by the rule of law (32%) and solidarity between EU Member States and its regions (27%). Democracy and the protection of human rights in the EU and around the world remain in fifth place with 22%, and freedom of speech and thought – in sixth place with 20%.
