Jazz star Fuensanta Mendez, Vestards Šimkus and young writers will perform in the cultural space M/Darbnīca / Diena

In Fuensanta Mendez’s innovative music, various elements of nature are sung and played within the framework of various Latin American rhythms. Mendez graduated from the Amsterdam Conservatory, performed both in Mexico and in many European countries. In Riga he will perform together with Italian singer Marta Arpini and Latvian singer Līva Dumpi, who will play keyboard instruments and percussion. Fuensanta also skillfully uses a sound loop machine while performing, and also plays the harana, or a small guitar-like Mexican acoustic stringed instrument.

On the other hand, already on December 7 at 21.00 his recently released records Acclivity the program will be offered by pianist Vestards Šimkus together with an avant-garde jazz trio endless roar, in which Latvian double bass player Stanislavs Yudins and foreign musicians residing in Latvia joined: Lithuanian saxophonist Arvīds Kazlausks and Singaporean-American percussionist Džeikins Pusons.

on 8 December at 21.00 there will be a cinema evening dedicated to Tom Harjo’s feature film Seed. Young Riga stage actor and photographer Tom Harjo’s debut feature film was made in Pāvilost together with his classmates, creating three different vignettes of romantic relationships. Using both irony and cutting observations about his generation, the roles in the film are played by actors Agate Krista, Jānis Grūtups, Marta Lovisa, Matīss Ozols, Sabīne Tīkmane as well as Harjo himself. After watching the film, there will be a meeting with the filmmakers.

on 9 December the International Literature Festival will take place at 18.00 Prose readings evening my story which will be led by Inga Žolude and in which Gunta Barbāne, Ieva Būmane, Guntars Ceravs, Santa Igaune, Agnese Irmeja, Santa Kapakle, Laura Lapiņa, Sanita Rubene, Vineta Stīpniece, Edijs Schauers, Māra Upmane-Holstein and Yvonne Zīle will participate. The author’s works were created in writing workshops led by the writer Inga Žolude The story of my book in the frame. The authors will present their stories in five-minute readings. Musical accompaniment will be provided by Māra Upman-Holštein and Melissa Deborah Kashkur.

on 10 December at 21.00 in the cultural space M/Workshop a jazz quintet will perform Plain Quintet, which was joined by students from The Hague Royal Conservatory from Latvia, Italy and India. The concert program includes compositions by Miles Davis, Art Blackie and other jazz greats that best highlight the quintet’s instrumentalists’ strongest qualities. Plain Quintet the music is performed by Latvian trumpeter Kristians Kalva and drummer Davids Dāvis Eglītis, as well as Italian saxophonist Pietro Mirabasi, Italian guitarist Emiliano Roka and Indian double bass player Arjuns Ramdass.

“We continue to think hard about the diversity of cultural event content,” says kulturtelpas M/Workshop creative director and manager Maija Moira Mazanova. “This creates a saturated and regular modern cultural environment for both ourselves and our guests, which is also the creative goal of our cultural space. Of course, we still place the greatest emphasis on music that lives close to the world of jazz. December it’s a festive month for us, and various events will take place almost every day, so I invite culture lovers to follow the events calendar!”

In the cultural space M/Workshop there is also an exhibition hall M/Gallery, where an exhibition of 19 young Latvian artists was inaugurated Christmas Edition Vol. 2. More than 50 works can also be purchased at reasonable prices. The exhibition will be open until December 30th.
