Jayson Tatum makes Celtics history to equal Larry Bird record

When Jayson Tatum scored 53 points for the Boston Celtics against the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 9, he promised that he would do it again because his three-year-old son, Deuce, wasn’t there to see it.

The 23-year-old stuck to his word on Friday night, registering an historic total of 60 points as the Celtics came back to beat the San antonio spurs 143-140 after overtime. This time, Deuce was watching from the sidelines.

The total of 60 points is a joint record for the Celtics, with Tatum equalling Larry Bird’s record points tally in the team’s history.

What’s more, Tatum becomes just the third player to shoot 60 points without losing the ball since turnovers started being recorded in the NBA in 1977. The other two are Carmelo Anthony and Klay Thompson.

Not only that, but Tatum also becomes the youngest player to shoot 60 points since record-holder Devin Booker did it at 20 years and 145 days old.

Against the Spurs, Tatum shot 50 points in regulation time, with a further 10 in overtime, as the Celtics came from 32 points down to win. That was the second biggest comeback in the last 20 years in the NBA.
