66 days. It was so long ago that a Bundesliga match was played last. The Gladbachers won 2-1 in the ghost game against Cologne. After that, football stopped. The long wait ended on Saturday. Germany was the first major league to start playing again. Football at last. Finally Bundesliga again. But not only the German fans thought that. The international stars were also happy that the ball was rolling again.

PSG star Kylian Mbappé reported via Twitter. The 21-year-old world champion watched the ghost derby between Dortmund and Schalke (4-0) on TV and posted it on Twitter under the hashtag #BundesligaIsBack. For the French, however, their own season has ended. Ligue 1 canceled the championship because of the corona pandemic. Paris Saint-Germain was at the green table declared master.

Milan superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic is grateful that the Bundesliga will be played again. He reported via Instagram and highlighted the embassy with the national colors of Germany. The 38-year-old Swedish striker wrote: «They say it, they do it. Thanks Bundesliga. » It is not yet certain whether Series A can continue. But there is a ray of hope. From Monday the teams can train again, if only in small groups.

The footballers looked longingly to Germany in the mother country of football. England was not only happy about the pioneer in Europe, they seemed to be in a real Bundesliga hype. Pay-TV broadcaster BT Sports showed all games live, the tabloid “Sun” added a 12-page special on Saturday and read: “Football is back.” The newspaper also provided an overview in which each Premier League team was compared with a German counterpart. For example, Manchester United fans became supporters of the otherwise “hated” Bayern.

«First conclusion after 90 minutes: as expected, very strange without fans. Nevertheless, it is fun to finally see football again after such a long time, »tweets the German international Ilkay Gündogan, who is still waiting with Manchester City for a restart in the Premier League. BBC commentator Gary Lineker posts the world hit “Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel for the Bundesliga ghost game day.

More spectators than ever

The frenzy of joy is not so natural. Not for everyone at least. The restart in the Bundesliga was preceded by long discussions. According to the Politbarometer, 62 percent of Germans have expressed their opposition to the resumption of the Bundesliga. Halfway through Saturday’s first ghost game day, many seemed to have changed their minds.

The success becomes even clearer with the target group of the offer, the 14- to 49-year-old viewers. The total offer from Sky came on Saturday afternoon to a market share of over 60 percent in the target group. A record in the history of Sky, the media magazine continues.

Never before have so many viewers seen the Bundesliga on pay channels as this Saturday. Sky had 3.68 million TV viewers at kick-off at 3:30 p.m. with individual games and the conference – about twice as many as on normal game days, reports the media magazine «DWDL». The market share was an exceptional 27.4 percent. 2.45 million viewers (18.2 percent market share) also watched the conference on the free-to-air channel Sky Sport News HD.

The “sports show” has 4.11 million viewers in the first. The current sports studio on ZDF was followed by 2.11 million fans later that evening.
