A Japanese man in his seventies died on Tuesday after his jacket got stuck in the escalator of a train station. He was taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead there.

72-year-old Mamoru Suzuki was found by staff at JR Mito station in Hitachi on Tuesday evening around 9 p.m. It was at the end of the escalator that connects a platform to the place where you can normally buy a ticket. The escalator was still moving.

The man apparently got his jacket stuck in the handrail of the escalator. Suzuki was still conscious and was taken to hospital. But he later lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The cause of death is not yet known. Police will review the station’s CCTV footage to identify further clues and investigate the incident.
