The first tsunami waves have begun to reach the coast, the country’s meteorological service announced. Waves as high as 1.2 meters reached the port of Wajima on the Noto Peninsula in the northernmost part of Ishikawa Prefecture.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida today called for the immediate evacuation of areas where a tsunami threat has been declared.

Another strong earthquake hits the Philippines

The company that operates the nuclear power plants in the three prefectures in the path of the tidal waves announced that they are further checking the safety of the facilities. No problems have been reported so far following the strong earthquake and aftershocks, the government said.

“It has been confirmed that so far there are no anomalies at the Shika NPP and other plants,” said cabinet spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi.

High-speed trains in central and eastern Japan have been suspended. Over 36,000 households were left without electricity. The earthquake, which was recorded around 16:10 local time, also shook buildings in the center of the capital Tokyo.
