Japan fears threats from Russia and China

Japan showed its annual security report, which paid a lot of attention to the war in Ukraine. Tokyo believes that Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine could set a bad example for China and serve as a signal that “an attempt to change the status quo by force is acceptable.”

Japan notes that Russia is increasingly relying on its nuclear capability as a deterrent. This, in turn, worries the Japanese authorities, since Russian nuclear submarines regularly operate near its territories.

Also, the Japanese Ministry of Defense paid much attention to Taiwan, since the island has been actively working to strengthen its self-defense efforts since the start of the war in Ukraine.
