Janos Kobor, the vocalist of the band Omega, is dead. He was the performer of the hit “Gyongyhaju lany” – “Girl with pearl hair”

Janos Kobor – vocalist of the Hungarian rock band Omega – died at the age of 78 after “a brief illness”. Information about the death of the co-creator of the hit known in Poland as “Girl with pearl hair” appeared on Monday on the band’s profile.

Janos Kobot, also known as Mecky, died at the age of 78. “We are shocked to announce that Janos Kobor, the founder of the Omega band, with whom he won the Ferenc Liszt Awards and the Kossuth Prize, died after a short illness,” reads a post on social media.

“He was adored by millions of fans at home and abroad as a big star in the rock scene. We have no words, there is silence. Mecky will always remain in our hearts,” the band added in a short entry.

Janos Kobor was born in 1943 in Budapest. Back in the days of junior high school, he founded his first band, which in 1962 finally turned into Omega. In 1969 he recorded his greatest international hit “Gyongyhaju lana”, known in Poland as “The Girl with Pearl Hair”.

The piece was recorded over the years, then, among others, in Poland – by Kult, Janusz Radek or Zakopower. The English version of the song was recorded by the Scorpions group, and the German – by Frank Schoebel.

Kobor was not only a vocalist, but also many times the producer and recording director of Omega’s albums.

Omega is the most popular Hungarian rock band of all time. She has sold over 50 million records worldwide.
