She was in the making for five years, now the time will come soon. On January 28, 2022, the American TV channels A&E and Lifetime will broadcast the first part of a large documentary about Janet Jackson (55). The occasion is the 40th stage anniversary of the singer.

For Mariah Carey (52) Janet Jackson is a “self-determined woman”, for Samuel L. Jackson (73, neither related nor related by marriage) “the greatest show woman” and for Whoopi Goldberg (66) “many women in one”. The trailer for “Janet” not only boasts top-class interview partners, but also promises to look behind the facade of a versatile artist. “This is my story, the truth,” is the official subtitle.

Intimate glimpses into a public family

Janet Jackson is actually considered to be more cautious about the public. All the more surprising is the documentary, which the broadcaster Lifetime hypothesizes a little prematurely as the “TV event of the decade”. The trailer announces at least previously unreleased home video recordings from the showbiz family Jackson, into which Janet was born in 1966.

We see her strict father, Joseph Jackson (1928-2018), who drove his children to pursue a career in music. And of course we see her big brother Michael hovering over the documentary. When mother Katherine (91) is supposed to talk about him, she is silent through tears.

Janet Jackson says that she long sought her own place in the family and in show business: “There were times when I didn’t understand where I fit in.” It’s also about taking control of your own career in the documentary. About “Control”, as the title of her third album is, with which she celebrated her breakthrough as a singer in 1986.
