Jakub Malina choked while eating. Was it possible to save him?

The son of businessman Tomáš Malina died at the age of 34 when he was bitten by a bite while eating. According to the eXtra.cz website, he started suffocating in one of Prague’s restaurants. He died after 14 days in a coma. Could he have been helped if the people in the restaurant knew exactly what to do at a critical moment?

An up-and-coming footballer and lover of beautiful women and luxury cars, according to the website eXtra.cz suffocated in one of Prague’s restaurants after inhaling a piece of meat. He was subsequently taken to hospital, where he died two weeks later in a coma.

According to the website Blesk.cz people in the restaurant just looked at the ex-boyfriend Eliška Buckková or Gabriela Dvořák’s gags. “The moment the young man started choking, no one present had any idea what was happening. People just watched and at first no one came to his aid,” described the editors Fast events in a luxury restaurant. Eventually an ambulance arrived at the company and took Malina to the hospital. However, he fell into a coma from which he never recovered.

In the Heimlich grip, the upper abdomen is compressed at the point between the breastbone and the navel. The rescuer stands behind the disabled person with whom he is in close contact. One hand is made into a fist and the side of the thumb is applied to the point that the rescuer had previously determined (felt) as the compression point. The palm of the other hand rests on the small side of the fist and performs up to five upper abdominal thrusts in a backward and upward direction. The pathophysiological principle of the procedure is as follows: the pressure exerted by the rescuer through the abdominal wall on the intestine is transferred against the diaphragm, which presses on the lungs, where a positive pressure is created distal to the obstacle, which, with a good constellation, it can move the foreign body proximally, i.e. closer to the larynx, or release it into the pharynx. The maneuver is named after the American physician Henry Heimlich. (source: Rescuers Chamber).

Was it possible to save Jakub Malina’s life?

This is a serious question and no one has a crystal ball in hand to responsibly say that Malina could have lived. However, it is good to know what to do in critical situations. Inhaling a dangerous object is not as unusual as it might seem at first glance. It is therefore good to know what the first aid should be like.

There is a lot of talk about the so-called Heimlich maneuver (grip). This is a technique that comes in handy when other attempts to clear the airways have failed. When the Heimlich maneuver is applied, however, the abdominal cavity may be injured or the xiphoid process may rupture. Before approaching him, the rescuer should then try to open the airway of the individual in danger with five blows between the shoulder blades. If the airways are not released even after the fifth blow, the Heimlich maneuver can be performed.

However, it is impossible to estimate whether, in the case of Jakub Malina, a quicker reaction of the people in the restaurant really would have led to a better end. According to information from the Blesk.cz website, it would be impossible to say that the young man could not breathe. His brain was deprived of oxygen for several minutes. Over the weekend, Tomáš Malina’s son was disconnected from devices. According to Blesk, the devastated father said goodbye directly to him at the hospital.
