Jaime de Bourbon de Parme: ‘Being a prince too opens doors’

“I notice that it helps. It gives an extra charge,” says Princess Irene’s youngest son about his royal title. “If I am invited somewhere, there are several climate envoys and then that extra layer of glitter helps to open doors. You get the floor a little earlier, you get access to ministers. You are often more easily received at ministerial level than other officials.”

Jaime (49) has been climate envoy for the Netherlands since last year. In this position, he works on behalf of the Netherlands on solutions to the climate crisis. The fact that he was previously a diplomat in conflict regions such as Iraq and Afghanistan also helps him in his new position, he says. “You work in difficult circumstances and climate negotiations are also difficult circumstances. But you will also feel the effects of climate in those very vulnerable areas worldwide. So a background with knowledge about those areas is useful.”
