Cannon Hinnant’s death is a stir in the US. The white boy, barely 5 years old, was shot dead on his bicycle in his garden in Wilson, North Carolina by his black boy next door. Darius Sessoms (25) is said to have deliberately walked on the boy and shot a bullet in the head. It is not clear what his motive was. In the highly polarized US, racism is immediately suspected, but so far there is no evidence of this.
The little boy’s father says in the local newspaper Wilson times that his son was playing with his sisters when he was shot just like that. At first he thought the boy had just fallen until he went out. TV channel WRAL spoke some eyewitnesses, who testified that they had not seen any reason for the murder. It is noteworthy that the perpetrator, who has lived next door to the family for eight years, had had a pint with his neighbor the night before. Cannon’s dad doesn’t think it’s racism: he thinks Darius was high and hallucinated when he fired the fatal shot.
A black jailer from New Jersey had his own opinion about it. Rome Smith wrote on Facebook that the boy “should have ducked” and wondered where his parents were when it happened. The post was labeled “extremely insensitive and racist” by the local authorities, and his employer immediately suspended him. “We do not tolerate our employees sending hate messages,” said Joseph Derella, the juvenile detention chief. Sessoms has been charged with murder.
