Sprūds: As long as the power structure in Belarus has the support of the President, new presidential elections will not be possible – Society and Politics – News

Analyzing what is happening in Belarus, Sprud stressed that Lukashenko’s confidence in winning the presidential election will not be so easy to change, although he is not aware that he has lost public confidence in it.

“I think Lukashenko is the president of the power structure and, as long as he has the support of the president, it will be very difficult to hold new presidential elections,” said Sprud, adding that Belarus is no longer what it was 26 years ago, because Lukashenko is now is the president of OMON and the Belarusian bureaucracy, not the people.

Sprud compared the events in Belarus to what happened in Venezuela, because after Nicolas Maduro, whose re-election was not recognized by a number of countries around the world, there is chaos in Venezuela, and Manduro is still holding on to the reins of power.

However, Sprud expressed hope that the active movement of the Belarusian society would sooner or later lead to the resignation of Lukashenko.

Meanwhile, many thousands of people had gathered in Minsk’s Independence Square on Thursday night for another protest rally demanding the resignation of President Lukashenko and the holding of new elections.

According to the opposition website “Hartija 97”, the number of participants in the rally has reached 20,000.

Pavil Juhhnevich, an activist of the civic campaign “European Belarus”, spoke at the rally, calling for the protests to continue until victory.

“We are in a situation where we and the former president [Lukašenko] we understand – if one side loses, it will be the final. If we lose, the country will turn into a concentration camp. If he loses – but he loses – then in his courts, so we must not lose. We have to go to the end! “Said Juhņevičs.

Rallies chanted “Believe! We can! Let’s win!” (“Veri! Možam! Peremožam!”), “Go away!”, “Victory is ours – Sasha, get away!” (“Pobeda nasha – ubiraisya, Sasha!”), “Every day!” and sang songs.

Protest rallies, marches and other actions against Lukashenko also took place on Thursday evening in other Belarusian cities, including Bobruisk, Borovlan, Brest, Grodno, Kalinovichi, Kobrin, Lida, Novogrudok, Osipovichy, Pruzan, Radoshkovich, Stecica, Reichitsk.

Protests against the falsification of the August 9 presidential election and authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko, who have often escalated into protesters’ clashes with security forces, remain unabated in Belarus. Thousands have been detained and several hundred injured in protests. Workers in many state-owned enterprises are on strike.

According to official results, Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, won 80.1% of the vote, while opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovska won 10.1%, but the opposition believes the election results are fake and Tikhanovska has won the election. German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Wednesday after the European Union summit that EU countries do not recognize the election results.
