Jaen’s wetlands are “heritage assets to be conserved” | Radio Jaén

The wetlands of the province of Jaén, under study. The Instituto de Estudios Giennenses has published an investigation that delves into the importance of seasonal wetlands which are located in the southwest of the province of Jaén. A publication that derives from the doctoral thesis carried out by Rafael Vega-Pozuelo and that was the winner of the Agricultural and Environmental Research Award of the Institute of Giennenses Studies (IEG) within its collection “Research”.

In it, up to 53 wetlands and 27 salt flats of the natural heritage of the province are studied. Specifically in the area between the Guadalbullón and Guadajoz rivers, in the Guadalquivir river basin. Francisca Medina, first vice president of the Provincial Council and head of the IEG, reported that “this study helps us to better understand the natural heritage of the province of Jaén, in this case through its seasonal wetlands and salt flats, which have sometimes been overlooked, helping these habitats to be taken into account as heritage assets to be conserved”.

A new example of the importance of the IEG “for the dissemination of research, since helps us to know the reality of Jaén, and the IEG has become a reference center for research and dissemination of issues related to the province in the fields of social, natural and humanistic sciences ”. This work brings together an open inventory of Mediterranean seasonal wetlands in the southwest of the province of Jaén, accompanied by cartography and details of the geographic context of each one of them.

The study delves into the different types of seasonal wetlands such as ponds, lagoons, crypto-wetlands or continental salt flats. “Specifically, this research has been carried out in the municipalities of Alcalá la Real, Alcaudete, Andújar, Arjona, Arjonilla, Cárcheles, Castillo de Locubín, Cazalilla, Escañuela, Espelúy, Frailes, Fuensanta de Martos, Fuerte del Rey, La Guardia de Jaén, Higuera de Calatrava, Jaén, Jamilena, Lahiguera, Lopera, Marmolejo, Martos, Mengíbar, Noalejo, Pegalajar, Porcuna, Santiago de Calatrava, Torredelcampo, Torredonjimeno, Valdepeñas de Jaén, Villanueva de la Reina, Villardompardo and Los Villares ”.
