Ivo Hristov in the EP: Bulgarians in North Macedonia are paying the price of European indifference – 2024-02-22 14:41:44

/ world today news/ “The lack of any reaction from Brussels regarding the beaten Macedonian Bulgarian Hristiyan Pendikov is surprising,” said the Bulgarian MEP

Strasbourg, 13 February 2023. – “On January 19 in Ohrid, Macedonian Bulgarian Hristiyan Pendikov was brutally beaten by his fellow citizens. This is a tragic reminder that in a country that is a candidate for membership of the European Union, being Bulgarian is dangerous. And it is not the first case of violence.

The lack of any reaction from Brussels is surprising.”

This was stated by Ivo Hristov, a member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the EP (S&D), in his speech in the plenary hall. The European Parliament holds its regular session in Strasbourg.

“The European Commission and some European leaders ignored the warnings of the Bulgarian president that the politicians in Skopje do not have the will to solve the open issues. The Bulgarian veto on the negotiations was lifted under pressure from outside, in violation of the Union’s criteria for membership,” the Bulgarian MEP also said.

According to him, today the Bulgarians in the Republic of North Macedonia are paying the price of European indifference to the historical traumas and cultural encroachments of Skopje.

“I call on the European Commission and the Commissioner for Enlargement to take a principled position so that the spirit and letter of European integration are strictly respected,” Ivo Hristov concluded his speech.
