Inexpensive repellents used to treat parasitic infections such as head lice and scabies have lowered the mortality rate of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) by up to 80%, a study found.

The UK’s Daily Mail reported on the 4th (local time) that 11 clinical trials in developing countries such as Egypt and Argentina in which 1,400 patients with Corona19 were administered the anthelmintic ivermectin. The newspaper cited an analysis by Dr. Andrew Hill, a virologist at the University of Liverpool, that eight out of 573 patients receiving ivermectin and 44 out of 510 patients receiving placebo (placebo) died. “Ivermectin has been shown to significantly shorten the time it takes for the Corona 19 virus to be removed,” said Dr. Hill.

In fact, in a trial conducted in Egypt with 200 mild patients, 100 patients receiving ivermectin had the virus disappeared within 5 days. By comparison, it took 10 days for the virus to disappear in 100 people who received placebo. Even in a trial under the same conditions in 200 severely ill patients, the ivermectin-treated group was 6 days and the placebo-treated group was 12 days.

This clinical trial was commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO). In March, a research team at Monash University in Australia announced the results of a test confirming that ivermectin suppressed Corona 19, and clinical trials are ongoing in patients around the world to verify the actual effect.

However, opinions still differ on whether the cheap repellent developed in the 1970s could actually be used as a treatment for Corona 19. Some people in the medical community point out that the number of participants in this clinical trial is small, and that the dose of ivermectin is different because the trial is not designed to be elaborate, and thus reliability is poor.
