She and French President Emmanuel Macron planned to have face-to-face conversations with Putin inside the European Council in 2021, his last summer as Germany’s head of government, she said.
“The Minsk agreements no longer worked. In the summer of 2021, after the meeting between the Russian and US presidents Putin and Joe Biden, President Macron and I wanted to try again to create a separate format of dialogue with Putin in the scope of the European Council agreement … But there were also objections that I no longer had the power to pursue my political line, because everyone knew that in the autumn of that year I would have to leave my post,” he said.
Speaking about her last visit to Moscow in August 2021, Merkel described her powerlessness to influence the Russian president, including due to possible aggression.
“The feeling was very clear: as far as influence in politics is concerned, it’s over for me. For Putin, only power is important,” the politician shared.
She also acknowledged that she had failed to resolve other foreign policy issues associated with the Russian intervention.
“In foreign policy, despite the fact that we tried new things again and again, I, in the end, have not advanced a millimeter. It’s not just about Ukraine. It’s about Transnistria and Moldova, Georgia and Abkhazia, Syria and Libya . time. for a new approach,” he added.
Merkel has been chancellor since 2005. After 15 years in office, she refused to stand for election again. She stated this in 2018 and in her New Year’s Eve address in 2021 confirmed his decision.
