Italy exceeds 24,000 fatalities and reaches lowest increase in infections in the last month – News

The number of people sick with COVID-19 in Italy has dropped for the first time, the Italian authorities announced today, specifying that the number of positive and active cases of infection at this moment are 108,237, minus 20 compared to Sunday.

“It is the first time, it is a positive development”, declared the head of the Italian Civil Protection, Angelo Borrelli, at that organisation’s daily press conference.

Italy today reached 24,114 deaths associated with the new coronavirus, having counted 454 deaths in the last 24 hours, a number higher than the 433 registered on Sunday.

Despite this growth in daily deaths, the Italian authorities indicated that the number continues to reflect a downward trend. Globally, since the diagnosis of the first case of covid-19 of internal contamination in the country, in February, Italy has so far accounted for a total of 181,228 infected people.

The Italian Civil Protection said today that 48,877 people are considered cured, an increase of 1,822 people compared to Sunday’s figures.

Another data highlighted by Angelo Borrelli was the descent of infected people hospitalized in intensive care units.
According to the official, 2,573 people are currently in intensive care units, a decrease of 62 patients compared to Sunday.
