It won’t work out this time either. Maserati Grecale will not be introduced until 2022

The new SUV with a trident in the emblem was to be introduced in the spring. But in the end, we won’t see Maserati Grecale until next year.

Maserati is currently working on the renaissance of the brand, but so far it seems that it came at an inopportune time. Last year’s spectacular presentation had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, so we did not see the expected MC20 supersport until the autumn, although it was originally planned to show up several months earlier.

And the problems continue this year. Maserati has prepared the premiere of the next model of its new generation, the Grecale SUV, for this year, but its performance is gradually being postponed. It was originally supposed to be presented in the spring, then the premiere was postponed in the autumn (specifically to 16 November) and now the carmaker has announced that Grecale will not officially show the world until the spring of 2022.

The management explains this step by the current lack of key components, especially semiconductors, needed to complete the car’s production process. As a result, the carmaker would not be able to supply the car in such a volume as to satisfy the expected demand. And so the postponement of the presentation of the news until next year proved to be a suitable step.

Maserati Grecale at the same time, it is to be an important part of the future of the brand, which is now at the top of the Stellantis Group’s hierarchy. It will be a completely new SUV using the same basis as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, which will complement the similarly large Levante model. In contrast, Grecale will want to be more practical and at the same time more sport-oriented, with the ambition of being the fastest and best accelerating SUV in its category. Levante, on the other hand, presents itself more as gran turismo over long distances.

Despite the same technical basis with Stelvius and the same production site – the Cassino plant – Grecale is likely to differentiate itself from its sibling by offering engines. Apparently he gets aggregates of his own design, either electrified four-cylinder known from Ghibli or a six-cylinder fork derived from it in the MC20. The arrival of a purely electric version is not ruled out either.

In any case, it is not clear at this time whether the postponement of the premiere of Grecale will affect others future Maserati plans. This year, the new generation of the GranTurismo model was also to be introduced, newly also offered in a purely electric version. But there is still silence on the footpath, as well as the previously announced open version of the MC20 or MC20 with electric drive.
