The monthly records show that it can get much colder. On April 5, 1911, the mercury in De Bilt stuck at 1.7 degrees. This is the coldest April day ever measured in De Bilt. In Maastricht (-0.5 degrees) and Den Helder (-0.4 degrees) there was even an ice day with maximums below freezing.
On average, we see snow in April once every three years and it is common for about four days a month to frost in the nights in De Bilt.
