It turns out that this is the reason why WHO has not made Covid-19 an endemic – All Pages

GridHEALTH.id – In recent times, Covid-19 cases around the world have tended to slope.

Some countries have even relaxed some of their rules regarding this health protocol (prokes) Covid-19 is like removing a mask in an open space.

However, until now the World Health Organization (WHO) has not declared Covid-19 as endemic.

So why is that?

Reported by Al Jazeera (17/4/2022), it turns out that there are several reasons why the WHO has not made Covid-19 endemic.

One of which is virus Covid-19 this could still trigger a major outbreak around the world.

That’s what WHO Health Emergencies Program Director Michael Ryan said.

According to Ryan, it is wrong for people to think that Covid-19 will subside and become endemic, which means the end of the problem.

“I certainly don’t believe we have achieved anything anywhere near an endemic situation with this virus,” he said.

“It has not become an endemic disease,” said Ryan.

In addition, it is also said that the Covid-19 virus has not entered into any seasonal disease pattern or transmission.

Ryan said that the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which already has many variants, is still capable of causing large outbreaks.

“Don’t believe the endemic is the same as being over, it’s light or it doesn’t matter. It’s not at all,” he said.

Ryan cited examples of tuberculosis and malaria as endemic diseases that still kill millions of people every year.

Last week, the number of Covid-19 deaths was the lowest since the pandemic in early 2020.

However, with more than 20,000 deaths reported.

“It’s still too much, we should be happy but we shouldn’t be complacent,” Ryan said.

He explained that once an epidemic disease persists into an endemic pattern, it can often become a childhood disease, such as measles and diphtheria, because when a new child is born, they are vulnerable.

Ryan also said if vaccination rates fell, as happened with measles, the epidemic could break out again.

WHO Covid-19 Technical Lead Maria Van Kerkhove said the coronavirus continued to circulate at high rates, causing massive amounts of death and destruction.

“We are still in the middle of this pandemic. We all hope it is not so. But we are not in the endemic stage,” he said.

Seeing the WHO explanation, of course the public is still obliged to be aware of the transmission of Covid-19 and various other variants.

In addition to getting a complete Covid-19 vaccine, we also need to carry out health protocols (prokes) in a disciplined manner.

Moreover, the transmission of Covid-19 until now is very difficult to predict, anyone can be infected.

According to the page who.int (9/7/2020), that Covid-19 is transmitted through direct contact with respiratory droplets from an infected person, both produced through coughing or sneezing.

A person can also become infected from touching a surface that is contaminated with the virus and then touching their face eg eyes, nose, mouth.

Therefore, carrying out procedures such as 5M (wearing masks, washing hands with soap and running water, maintaining distance, staying away from crowds and limiting mobilization and interaction) should not be ignored even though the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine has been injected.
